Do Carpenter Bees Sting?

If you see carpenter bees around your house, you may be concerned for your safety. There is a common misconception that all bees and wasps sting. As we all know, carpenter bees like burrowing and living in wood structures. By getting rid of a carpenter bees nest, you may provoke them to attack. Therefore you are asking yourself, do carpenter bees sting?

Carpenter bees are a very calm type of bee. While they are very damaging because they burrow into homes, they will tend not to harm humans.  Luckily, male carpenter bees do not sting because they are not equipped with a stinger. When provoking a colony of carpenter bees, it is usually the male carpenter bees that will come up to your face because the males have a curious personality and are very territorial. The males are easily provoked but they do not have the capability of stinging.

On the other hand, female carpenter bees have a stinger, therefore they can sting. But they have to be extremely provoked in order for them to sting. Females usually stay around the nest or pollinate and will rarely approach humans compared to the males. Female carpenter bees can inflict a very powerful and painful sting. Luckily they rarely sting. You would need to do something extreme like grab it in your hand or poke it in order for it to sting. Otherwise, it will not sting. Females also do not die when they sting you as would other bees.

Do Carpenter Bees Sting

If you are stung by a female carpenter bee, you may want to put ice on the sting to ease the pain. If you are allergic to bee stings, it is important to get the necessary treatment immediately, and this may mean going to a hospital or emergency room right away. If your reaction to the bee sting is more than just a red itchy bump at the sting location or you break into hives all over your body, this may mean that you are allergic and should get the appropriate treatment immediately.
